This week Adbongo, Inc. received B Corporation certification marking it as a business that voluntarily follows environmental and social practices above and beyond those required of other businesses. Through their role as business incubator Adbongo aims to spread B certification to other businesses with the stated goal of helping Texas to become the number one state for certified B Corporations.
The name explains the purpose of B Corporations: the “B” stands for “Benefit.” Unlike traditional corporations Certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.
Certified B Corporations meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. It is like a LEED certification but for all businesses, not just buildings. The performance standards are comprehensive and transparent.
Founded in 2006 Adbongo started out as an advertising agency that beat to a different drum. In response to needs of clients that were going unfilled Adbongo evolved broader capabilities and now provides a wide spectrum of business development services. Adbongo, Inc. qualified as a B corporation because it is a business incubator that grows social and environmental ventures which use the triple bottom line (people, planet and profit) to measure their success.
B Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. They believe B Corporations are on track to becoming a legally recognized new corporate form (like a C corp or an S corp) and tax incentives, procurement preferences, and a social stock exchange for sustainable businesses. Already two states (MD and VT) have passed Benefit Corporation Legislation and the city of Philadelphia passed a tax break for Certified B Corporations in December 2009.
On January 20-21, 2012 Adbongo, Inc. is sponsoring a Zero Waste Boot Camp which will teach businesses how to become more sustainable based on B corporation principles. Internationally-known zero waste and sustainability expert Gary Liss will be leading this training.
Press passes are available for the workshop.
