Students on Ice 2013 Arctic Expedition

What: A celebration marking the return of participants for the 2013 Students on Ice (SOI) Arctic Expedition. Students on Ice is an award-winning organization that brings students, aged 14-19, on educational expeditions to the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Eighty-five students from Canada and 5 other countries visited Baffin Island and Greenland by ship from July 17 to July 27.

When: Sunday, July 28, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (remarks followed by interviews).

Where: Canadian Museum of Nature, 240 McLeod Street (at Metcalfe), Ottawa

Who: The team – which included 2 local Ottawa students, as well as 30 northern aboriginal students from Canada and Greenland – was joined by scientists (two from the Canadian Museum of Nature), historians, artists, Inuit leaders, educators, and polar experts. They learned about the natural history, human history and environmental issues of these Arctic regions.

Highlights included: sightings of iconic Arctic wildlife including polar bears and finwhales; visiting Uummannaq, Greenland during the town’s 250th Anniversary; hiking through Auyuittuq National Park; and visiting the “iceberg factory” of Ilulissat icefjord.

The Welcome Home event includes presentations of videos and photos from the expedition and the opportunity to meet and interview students who participated on the journey.

Quoi : Les membres des médias sont invités à célébrer le retour des participants de l’Expédition arctique 2013 de Students on Ice (SOI). Students on Ice est une organisation primée qui offre à des étudiants, âgés de 14 a 18 ans, des expéditions éducatives en Arctique et en Antarctique.

Quatre-vingt-cinq étudiants du Canada et de 5 autres pays ont pris la mer pour l’île de Baffin et le Groenland du 17 au 27 juillet.

Quand : Le dimanche 28 juillet 2013, de 10 h à 11 h 30.

Où : Musée canadien de la nature, 240 rue McLeod (angle Metcalfe), Ottawa.

Qui : À l’équipe – composée de 2 étudiants d’Ottawa ainsi que de 30 étudiants autochtones du Canada – se sont joints des chercheurs, des historiens, des artistes, des explorateurs, des éducateurs, et des experts des régions polaires. Les étudiants ont appris l’histoire naturelle, l’histoire des peuples et les problèmes environnementaux de ces régions arctiques.

Les points marquants de l’expédition comprenaient des signalements d’animaux emblématiques de l’Arctique dont des ours polaires et des rorquals communs ; une visite au village d’Uummannaq en Groenland pour célébrer son 250e anniversaire; de magnifiques randonnées dans le Parc national du Canada Auyuittuq sur l’Île de Baffin; et une visite au fjord d’Ilulissat en Groenland, reconnu pour des icebergs magnifiques

L’activité de bienvenue comprendra : des vidéos et des photos de l’expédition; et l’occasion de rencontrer et d’interviewer les étudiants qui ont participé à l’aventure.
