Nourish America Requests Donations for Southeast Flood Victims

September 25, 2009

Georgia state officials have urgently appealed to Nourish America for help to provide flood victims with much needed nutritional support after this week’s historic and deadly storm left many without homes – and many more without water, power and food.

“We could really use some help. We are calling for donations of food, water and other supplies for relief workers and the flood victims. Many, many families have been evacuated from their homes. Any donations we receive would be a blessing,” said State Representative Sharon Beasley Teague of Atlanta, Georgia.

According to Representative Beasley Teague, the greatest tragedy of this storm is that most families with flooded homes do not have flood insurance -so there is little help to replace property damaged by the storm. In addition, the first floors of many homes in Atlanta and surrounding areas are completely flooded. Since the first floor usually contains the kitchen, all food as well as the ability to store perishable foods and to prepare meals has been destroyed.

To date, nine people have lost their lives, experts estimate that a quarter of a billion dollars of property in the state of Georgia has been damaged, hundreds of roads and bridges have been destroyed, an uncounted number of homes and businesses are waste-deep in stagnant, unclean water – and more rain is predicted to come through this coming weekend.

Working in collaboration with the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL), Nourish America is requesting product and cash donations to help with the current flooding crisis in Georgia and other affected Southeastern states.

Robin Read, CEO of NFWL says, “We at the National Foundation of Women Legislators feel privileged to be able to work in conjunction with Representative Beasley Teague on this relief effort. Because of the hard work of Representative Beasley Teague and her staff, donated products will be distributed seamlessly throughout the area. We are proud to have Representative Beasley Teague as a member of the National Foundation of Women Legislators. We wish her and her family the best, as their home too has been flooded by this storm.”
