Nourish America Requests Immediate Help for Young Hurricane Survivors, Arriving At School Hungry

September 20, 2008

OJAI, CA. – september 19, 2008 – Nourish America needs your help. The Bayou communities in Louisiana were hit hard by both Hurricane Gustav and Ike. The families are still reeling from the devastation, and young students are coming to school desperate for food. In Texas, over two million Hurricane Ike survivors are still without power and thousands cannot go home. The need for additional supplies of nutrition and water is tremendous.

Hurricanes Gustav and Ike sent walls of water through Terrebone Parish in Louisiana decimating homes and structures. Families there are severely struggling. Reports indicate that national relief organizations are retreating from the area despite the lack of power and 9000 homes flooded. Children there started school today. Natalie Bergeron, Family Advocate at Bayou Grace said, “The principal of Pointe Aux Chene Elementary School of Montegut, LA told me today that she’d never seen the children so hungry. She gave the children three snacks today and they were still anxious for more. Since Hurricane Ike, many families just don’t have enough food at home.”

In rural Northwest Houston, Texas, Hurricane Ike landed a powerful blow. So many trees and power lines fell that power is not expected to be available for weeks in some areas. Power outages for rural families make well water inaccessible; food and water are in short supply. This morning, one couple walked 10 miles with their 10 month old baby to get food and water. When they arrived for supplies, they found a line of more than a thousand cars that extended for miles.

Nourish America’s collaborations with Office Depot Foundation, National Foundation of Women Legislators (NFWL), State Representative Debbie Riddle and Northwest Houston Chamber of Commerce and others have created an unprecedented distribution system at the local level that is getting nourishing food and water to hurricane survivors in Texas, thanks to donors Wyeth, Alacer, Clif Bar, Univera, Nature’s Plus, Tishcon Corp and others. But there are thousands more who still need help.

We need your support to continue.
