Port of Los Angeles Hosts First Industry Conference Focused on Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) or 'Cold-Ironing' Technology

SAN PEDRO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–April 18, 2006–The Port of Los Angeles, in cooperation with California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference (CMANC) and Coasts Oceans Ports Rivers Institute (COPRI), will host the first-ever conference on Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) on April 24 and 25, 2006, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel-Los Angeles Harbor, located at 601 S. Palos Verdes Street in San Pedro.

AMP, also known as “cold-ironing,” is a technology that enables ships at dock to turn off their emission-producing diesel engines and plug into clean electrical power. The Port of Los Angeles was the first port in the world to implement AMP on container ships, and continues to be the only port in the world using AMP for container ships.

Topics of discussion at the conference will include goods movement; environmental perspectives from representatives of California ports, manufacturers, and ship owners; and international trends and challenges. The agenda also includes land tours of the Yusen Terminals, Inc. (YTI) and APM Terminals’ Pier 400 container facilities, highlighting AMP installations at both locations.

Port of Los Angeles keynote speakers include Harbor Commission President S. David Freeman, Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D., Paul Johansen, Assistant Director of Environmental Management, with panel moderators Ralph Appy, Ph.D., Director of Environmental Management, Eric Caris, Assistant Director of Marketing, and Vahik Haddadian, Electrical Engineer.

Other speakers include representatives from the ports of Long Beach, Oakland and San Diego; California Air Resources Board; International Maritime Organization; Princess Cruise Lines; British Petroleum; Manson Construction; and Moffat & Nichol.
