New York – The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Global Compact yesterday released a book organized around a performance model focusing on how companies can embed Global Compact principles into the fabric of their business strategy.
Raising the bar – Creating value with the UN Global Compact was launched at Pfizer headquarters on June 23, 2004 and coincided with Kofi Annan’s Leaders’ Summit taking place in New York. A high-level panel was convened to discuss the book and how the Global Compact can make a difference to corporate values:
Designed to help companies understand the Global Compact framework and its principles, Raising the bar is the only publication that provides a catalog of available tools and implementation guidelines that companies can use to implement the Compact’s principles.
“The book illustrates the capacity of business to address the whole range of issues related to corporate social responsibility,” says Bertrand Collomb, Chairman of Lafarge and Chairman of the WBCSD. “It shows how business provides effective and innovative solutions by walking the talk and putting into practice its commitment.”
Raising the bar contains an inventory of knowledge, tools, examples and information sources, all organized around a basic performance model that embraces concepts familiar to business.
“The book puts ethical business practice at the heart of the corporation,” according to the WBCSD’s Claude Fussler, one of the book’s editors. “It also reflects stakeholders’ increasing demands that companies align with such universal principles.”
