The business, whose 19 brands are sold to customers in 130 countries, details key achievements of 2006, including how it has:

  • set up a Global Diversity Management unit and 22 Observatories on Diversity
  • created the position of Director of Ethics
  • piloted its raw material Sustainability Assessment Framework with 8 suppliers
  • developed indicators to measure the ‘naturalness’ and environmental impacts of raw materials
  • joined the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil
  • used green chemistry to develop Pro-Xylane, an anti-ageing active ingredient derived from beech trees
  • acquired SkinEthic, making L’Oreal a leader in reconstructed skin and alternative methods to animal testing
  • acquired the Body Shop and Laboratoires Sanoflore, experts in sustainable sourcing and organic cosmetics respectively
  • reduced the overall amount of energy, water and waste used, despite its growth
  • accelerated its supplier labour standards audit programme, carrying out 304 supplier audits, as well as audits of all its own factories and warehouses
  • helped train 200,000 hairdressers around the world in raising awareness on AIDS prevention to date.
