Transurban Launches its Third Sustainability Report

January 20, 2009

January 19, 2009 – The 2008 report charts the company’s ongoing management of its environmental, economic and social impacts.

It highlights the challenges, initiatives and commitments in the four ‘pillars’ of the sustainability agenda – Customers, Communities, Environment and Employees.

This year, Transurban continued to focus on climate change and consolidate existing programs. Importantly, it has started driving sustainability into its operations by revising management accountabilities.

Other sustainability highlights:

  • Completed the award-winning CityLink Tunnel Safety Project, a $12.5 million project to enhance safety in the Domain and Burnley tunnels in Melbourne

  • Co-sponsored the Herald Sun-CityLink Run for the Kids annual event, which raised almost $740,000 for Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.
  • Developed a draft Sustainable Purchasing Policy to formalise our commitment to buying environmentally preferred products and services.
  • Developed a Waste Management Strategy outlining initiatives for reducing, re-using and recycling office and roadside waste from our assets.
  • Reached financial close on the Capital Beltway HOT Lanes project in the US, which will ease congestion and create more opportunities for carpooling and public transit.

For the third year running, Transurban has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) World List of high performing companies and the Carbon Disclosure Project Climate Leaders Index (Australia and NZ).

As in previous years, the 2008 report has been externally assured and checked against Global Reporting Initiative guidelines, considered to set the global reporting standards in sustainability.
