Recent nominees have been announced for the 2011 Katerva Awards in global sustainability.
Recent Nominations:
- The United Nations Foundation’s GirlUp, channeling the energy and enthusiasm of adolescent girls in North America into providing help – and hope – for girls in developing countries. GirlUp recently has begun a petition drive to stop child marriages.
- Scientists Without Borders, providing a web-based platform to share cross-border expertise to address the world’s major problems.
- The Solar Impulse airplane, to be the first plane to attempt the a solar-powered, around-the-world flight by 2013.
- A shockwave-generating disc engine, developed by Norbert Müller of Michigan State University, able to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% and make hybrid vehicles 3.5 times more efficient and 30% lighter.
- Sharklet Technologies, which has developed a bacteria-resistant, eco-friendly surface that mimics shark skin.
Nominees of the Katerva Awards undergo a rigorous evaluation process involving 300+ recognized experts, 6 filtering phases, and 12 stages of focused review to discover the best of the best and assist in accelerating the success of these efforts. Katerva, through the Katerva Awards, recognizes game-changing innovations and efforts holding the greatest impact in global sustainability in each of 10 categories, including energy, behavioral change, transportation and gender equality. An online public vote and the Katerva Award Council will select one people’s choice winner and one grand prize winner from among these category winners. Winners will be announced during the fourth quarter of each year at a gala event leveraging multiple media and social partnerships to publicize the important work of these pioneers in sustainability.
