UTC Takes Lead Among Peers in Publishing First Corporate Responsibility Report

HARTFORD, CT – United Technologies Corp. today released its first Corporate Responsibility Report, detailing the company’s environmental, ethics and social actions. UTC is first among its aerospace peers and the first Connecticut-based corporation to release such a report.

The Corporate Responsibility Report enables UTC to show the company’s record on non-financial issues, and to inform investors, customers and new employees about UTC values and priorities. In addition to achievements, the report describes UTC’s challenges and steps taken to address problems including environmental shortfalls.

“Corporate responsibility means embracing the highest standards, implemented by employees everywhere,” said UTC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer George David. “It demands a relentless focus on lessening negative impacts and increasing positive return.”

The report’s highlights include:

UTC has reduced hazardous air emissions 93 percent since 1990, while hazardous waste generation has declined 89 percent. Normalized water use has decreased 53 percent since 1997.

UTC has invested $462 million in its Employee Scholar Program since its inception in 1996. Nearly 16,000 employees have earned degrees through the program at no cost to themselves.

UTC has more than 260 Business Practice Officers who help implement and enforce the company’s Code of Ethics. UTC’s DIALOG Program has fielded more than 60,000 confidential DIALOG employee inquiries and investigated more than 10,000 employee ombudsman cases since the program’s inception in 1986.

UTC contributes more than $16 million annually to nonprofit organizations around the world.

UTC’s Corporate Responsibility Report was released during the company’s annual corporate volunteer luncheon, at which time David presented checks totaling $860,000 to the following Connecticut nonprofit organizations:

Greater Hartford Arts Council received $460,000 for continued support of the arts as well as GHAC’s partnership in the annual United Technologies Symphony on Ice holiday benefit.

University of Hartford received $250,000 to help build the school’s Integrated Science, Engineering and Technology Complex.

Yale School for Forestry & Environmental Studies received $75,000 for a biannual national poll on environmental topics.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford received $50,000 for the newly opened Asylum Hill club and for programming and operating support.

Artists Collective received $25,000 for the organization’s 2005 jazz and dance concert series.
